In a refreshing departure from the usual intensity that shrouds championship fight press conferences, Filipino challenger Jerwin Ancajas and defending champion Takuma Inoue showed mutual respect during a photo opportunity on Friday for the World Boxing Association bantamweight title fight in Kokugikan, Tokyo.

Amid smiles and an atmosphere lacking the usual bravado, Ancajas presented a souvenir shirt to his opponent, the younger brother of Japanese sensation Naoya Inoue.

The exchange included bows and a handshake, emphasizing a tone of sportsmanship rarely seen in the lead-up to such high-stakes bouts.

Ancajas’ message was short and sweet. “It’s all about respect. Good luck (to) both of us.”

The fighters are scheduled for another encounter at the weigh-in and final face-off on Friday, anticipated to be cordial once again.

However, the atmosphere is expected to shift dramatically when they step into the ring at the Kokugikan Arena on Saturday as they vie for the coveted 118-lb diadem.

In a recent interview, Ancajas vowed to deliver an impressive performance, expressing his desire for a victory that won’t go the distance.

“Dapat talaga impressive (performance) and mas maganda kung knockout,” said the former IBF super-flyweight champion, who boasts of a record 34-3-2, with 23 knockouts.

Despite Inoue’s 18-1 record as the reigning champion, he lacks the knockout power and killer instinct of his renowned brother Naoya, with only four knockouts in his victories.

Sean Gibbons of MP Promotions affirmed Ancajas’ intent to go for a knockout if the opportunity arises.

“The only knockout is for Jerwin Ancajas if it ever happens,” Gibbons told Manila sportswriters.

Two days before the bout, Ancajas showcased his readiness during a public workout, exuding confidence in his physical condition and expressing strong motivation to regain the world champion title.

Ancajas’ trainer and manager, Joven Jimenez, said they have a clear strategy, underscoring their goal to bring home the black and gold belt.
