Sesame Street’s blue Muppet, Grover, is now working as a reporter, and fellow journalists were worried that his new career would take a hit given the dire situation of the media.
“As a news reporter, I always do my research before I break a story. I am confident to report that you are so special and amazing!” Grover posted on X.
The self-proclaimed “cute, furry little monster” has held a wide variety of jobs since 1970, such as a waiter, mailman, professor, and hot dog vendor, among others.
A number of journalists predicted his stint as a journalist might be short-lived given the massive layoffs across the globe last year.
“[Grover] has been laid off without severance despite being part ofhis paper’s bargaining unit,” wrote Washington Post’s Angel Mendoza on X.
“Unfortunately, Grover was fired for not hitting his three story a day quota,” wrote Slate’s Scott Nover.
Cam Wilson of the Australian news outlet Crikey commented on X: “I feel so grim about the state of journalism that it drives me to crush the dreams of a Muppet character (and the poor social media staffer who runs it).”
Nearly 3,000 journalism jobs were slashed in last year, according to a report by the executive outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
