THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has reactivated its Counterintelligence Group (AFPCIG) amid rumors of destabilization plot against the government.

AFP chief Gen. Romeo Brawner led the revival of the group, saying it would play an important role in securing the nation and upholding the highest standard of integrity.

Brawner said reactivation of the AFPCIG was part of President Ferdinand Marcos’ commitment in securing the country.

“To the valiant men and women of the AFPCIG, the security of our beloved nation rests upon your capable shoulders. Your tireless efforts will ensnare any threats and guarantee the safety of our treasured citizens,” Brawner said.

“May the AFP Counterintelligence Group ascend to unimaginable heights, preserving the rights and liberties of our great nation,” he added.

The group was reactivated based on an order, effective Jan. 11, by Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro.

The AFPCIG was created in 1989 during the term of late President Corazon Aquino to counter  espionage, sabotage, and intelligence gathering following numerous coup attempts against her administration.

Col. Jonathan Manio would be acting commander of the group  under the supervision of AFP deputy chief for intelligence Maj. Gen. Ferdinand Barandon.
