Torrential rains, floods and class suspensions? No problem.

It appears the allure of learning is far more irresistible to students and educators who flocked to the World Trade Center in Pasay City to participate in the 2018 National Science and Technology Week which theme “Science for the People: Innovation for Collective Prosperity” highlighted the practical use of technological products and research outputs.

And for good measure.

Celebrated every third week of July through Proclamation No. 169 of 1993, the NSTW seeks to recognize the contribution of science, technology and innovation in the development of the country and garner support from the public and private institutions for its sustainable development.

Because for those who took time to visit the NSTW, which ended July 21, this once a year event is hard to pass up.

“This event is a must-see, must-visit experience. It gives science lessons a big boost, and to see actual science projects being applied in real life programs is cool,” said Neliza Reyes of Ismael Mathay Sr. High School in Quezon City.

“I’m excited to see more from participating groups in the future. But it is inspiring to see many participants despite the weather which just made the effort to be here more meaningful,” said Moira Ysabelle B. San Diego of Philippine Science High School-Central Luzon Campus.

“We celebrate NSTW to showcase the services and products of scientists, researchers, inventors, and innovators. And this time, we made S&T experiential,” said Dr. Richard Burgos, Director of the DOST’s Science and Technology Information Institute (STII).

Technologies developed by the Department of Science and Technology and its partners and attached agencies were on display via interactive exhibits labeled STI at Home, STI in School, STI in the Workplace and STI in the Marketplace.

The NSTW activities featured a variety of science and technology forums, technology exhibits, film shows, and scientific career talks.

Products of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) were also featured in a marketplace area.

“Science and technology are key pillars to development and to enhance national competitiveness. It is for this reason that we encourage the young to be more engaged in S&T, and for more Filipinos to mold a culture anchored on S&T. Science, after all, affects us even if are not aware of it,” explained Burgos.

The critical role of science writers in information dissemination was discussed during a writeshop.

Media can be used to reinforce rather than change existing attitudes, noted speaker Ruby Shaira F. Panela.

“Science journalists should help debunk myths, establish the science behind phenomenon,” said Panela. “If media is not careful in interpreting data, we can cause panic among the public.”
