Senator JV Ejercito, chairman of the Senate health committee, yesterday warned of a collapse of the country’s health system if the apparent financial mismanagement within the agency continues following reports of P8 billion losses.

“We are so dependent [on PhilhHealth]. We have only one source unlike in other countries. In Thailand, they have three health insurances. But here in our country, we only have one health insurance which is PhilHealth so we have to make sure that our finances are fixed,” explained Ejercito.

Ejercito also raised the possibility of a mafia or a syndicate inside PhilHealth.

After it reported an unaudited loss of nearly P9 billion last year.

"The situation in PhilHealth is akin to the housing sector fiasco. Was there a mafia in PhilHealth? I hope not, but the multi-billion loss is more than a mismanagement issue and lack of leadership," he said.
