SENATOR Joel Villanueva was on fire on Sunday as he buried five triples to lead the Defenders to an impressive win over the DOH Health Achievers, 93-58 in the UNTV Cup Season 6 at the Pasig City Sports Center.
“We got our rhythm early on. Ang pina-practice namin, talagang ‘yun ‘yung nangyayari sa game. We are confident and natutuwa kami dahil lumabas ‘yung game plan namin against DOH,” Sen. Joel Villanueva said.
Senator Villanueva, with a total of 23 points, and James Ryan Mangaran, who made 20 points, with 4 rebounds and 1 assist, were hailed as the Best Players of the Game.
With the win, the Senate Defenders grabbed the top spot of Group A with a 4-1 slate, while DOH stayed at the bottom with a 5-1 record.
Meanwhile, Malacañang-PSC toppled the Ombudsman Graft Busters, 128-79.
Although it had been tough for the Graft Busters, they did not give up until the last second of the game.
“Nandito na kami, sayang ‘yung opportunity na makapaglaro. So ibuhos mo na. Hindi naman lahat ng government agencies nabibigyan ng opportunities like this. So might as well play with all your heart, play with passion kahit na alam mo dehado ‘yung team mo,” Ombudsman’s Atty. Laure Quijano said.
In the Judiciary-DA hard-court battle, the two-time champion Magis gained a 4-1 win-loss standing after defeating the Food Masters, 112-103.
The Food Masters now have a 2-3 card and need to win their remaining game against the NHA Builders on Thursday to advance to the second round elimination of the season.
