Taguig students bag top science prizes

Three public elementary and secondary schools in Taguig City were recognized for inventing low-cost and eco-friendly products from recycled materials in the 2016 Kaohsiung International Invention and Design Expo in Taiwan.

The science team was composed of Grade 5 students Jaisa Julene Mataac, Kenth Andrew Gallardo and Ken Benavente from the Taguig Integrated School and Grade 10 students Jerome Sombilon and Anna Beatriz Suavengco from the Taguig Science High School. 

The students won gold medals in the said competition. 

On the other hand, the team of Ruth Paula Buhion, Ma. Erin Daphne Raton, Adrian Klein Comia and Kevin Brian Orge from the Sen. Renato Compañero Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School won a silver medal.

The three teams participated as part of the Science Training Program for Taguig public schools.

The international event organized by the World Invention Intellectual Property Associations included an invention competition where participants from more than 20 countries joined.

Under the Life Science Category, the Taguig Integrated School presented an antibacterial and antifungal bath soap made from PLC (Papaya, Lemon and Coconut Oil) while a correction fluid which uses egg whites as raw material called “Alburase” was invented by the Cayetano Memorial High School for the Office Product category.

In the Biotechnology category, Taguig Science High School proposed the “Remediation of Heavy Metal Ions in Synthetic Contaminated Effluent by Calcium Carbonate found in Asiatic Clams or Tulya Clams.”

Mayor Laarni Cayetano commended the students for their achievements.

“This international competition showcases the exceptional skills of our students and their interest to expand their capabilities in the field of Science. This success is a concrete testament of the improved quality education in the public school system of our city,” she said.
