The Environment Department on Friday suspended the environmental compliance certificate of Century Communities Corp. and Austral-Asia Link Mining Corp.
“We are suspending two major ECCs. One is that of Century which was given a housing development inside the La Mesa watershed. That’s the watershed of 12 million people and housing inside… is not an environmental thing to do,” said Environment Secretary Regina Lopez in a press conference.
Century Communities is the developer for the proposed 58-hectare Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System housing project in the La Mesa dam.
Century said it would appeal the decision, claiming it already complied with the provisions of the project’s ECC.
Meanwhile, Lopez said the department suspended the ECC of Austral-Asia, which operates a nickel mine in Mati, Davao Oriental, because its project was sandwiched by two heritage sites.
