The University of Perpetual Help completed its quest for the seniors’ back-to-back title, while Lyceum of the Philippine University (LPU) General Trias campus clinched the juniors’ crown at the end of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 99 chess championship over the weekend at St. Thomas Building, Letran College, Intramuros, Manila.
The Las Pinas woodpushers beat NCAA 78 season online chess champion San Beda University, 3.0 -1.0, with Most Valuable Player and Board 1 medalist Genesis Borromeo leading the Altas charge.
The Junior Pirates chess team outsmarted challenger UPH Junior Altas, 2.5 – 1.5, in their separate final showdown. National Master Angele Biete was awarded as Board 2 medalist and MVP.
“I congratulate my team, both the seniors and juniors, for doing their best for this, medyo kinapos lang sa finals yung juniors, we are looking forward to another crown next season. We are thankful for the whole support of the management and the Tamayo Family, especially Dr. Tony Tamayo and Boss Anton Tamayo,” Coach Roel Abelgas said in an interview.
Joseph Rivera of Jose Rizal University was named Rookie of the Year; Adrian De Luna of SBU was Freshman of the Year and emerging as Board 1 to 6 medalists were Genesis Borromeo UPH, Noel Geronimo of JRU, Joseph Rivera of JRU, Adrina De Luna of San Beda, Romeo Canino of UPH and Ferdie Casabuena of LPU.
FIDE Master Roel Abelgas was named coach of the year in the seniors’ division.
In the juniors’ division, Welsey Magbanua of UPH High School Department took the Rookie of the Year honor; Alexis Saballe of SSCR was Freshman of the Year and the Board medalists were Cedric Abris of College of St. Benilde, National Master Angle Biete of LPU, John Marcus Lomio of JRU, Wayne Ruiz of JRU, Ariel Santander of LPU and Wesley Magbanua of UPH.
LPU’s Emerson Sayaman was named coach of the year in the juniors’ Division.
LPU seniors’ chess team beat JRU in the battle for 3rd place via a 3.5 – 0.5 count, while Arellano Braves won over SBU Cubs in the battle for bronze, 3.0 – 1.0.
