St. Benilde solidifies hold on chess lead

College of Saint Benilde scored a 3-1 win over University of Perpetual Help System Dalta to solidify its hold on the top spot in the seniors’ division of the 95th NCAA chess tournament Sunday at the San Beda campus.

The back-to-back title-seeking Blazers now have a five-round total of 16.5 points.

San Beda, for its part, blanked Emilio Aguinaldo College, 4-0, to seize solo second with 12.5 points, four off St. Benilde.

The Altas dropped to third place with 10.5 points.

In other results, Mapua stunned Letran, 3-1, while Arellano University fashioned out a 2.5-1.5 victory over Lyceum of the Philippines University.

The Knights slipped to fourth with 9.5 points, while the Chiefs improved to 9 points in fifth.  The Cardinals rose to 6.5 points, while the Pirates settled for 8.5.

In the juniors’ division, titleholder Perpetual Help overpowered CSB-LSGH, 3.5-.5 to remain in the lead with 18 points.

Arellano still sits in second with 17 points despite battling to 2-2 draw with LPU, while San Beda downed EAC, 3-1, to improve at 16 points in third place.

Meanwhile, San Sebastian bested JRU, 3-1, while Mapua nosed out Letran, 3-1.
