St. Benilde sweeps men’s, women’s NCAA tennis crowns

COLLEGE of St. Benilde completed a sweet sweep of the men’s and women’s NCAA Season 99 lawn tennis at its conclusion at the PCA courts in Plaza Dilao in Paco, Manila.

The Blazing Netters edged the Mapua Cardinals, 2-1, to top the men’s side while the Lady Blazers turned back University of Perpetual Help, 2-1, in reigning supreme in the women’s side.

Francis Lera and Gian Macaraeg routed Al Quiza and Joaquin de Leon, 6-2, 6-4, in the doubles while Reyniel Marcellana edged Aldwyn Rosales, 6-1, 5-7, 7-5, in the deciding second singles in sweeping their way to their fifth championship.

Mapua’s lone win of the match came via 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 result by Laurenz Quitara over Carl Ubalde in the opening singles.

Dorelle Lagura and Kiana de Jesus eked out a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 triumph over Lyka Sanoza and Cindy Nuguit and Valeri Desoyo waylaid Aira Nuguit in reclaiming the women’s title CSB last won in the maiden edition of the division nine years ago.

UHSD’s Christy Sanoza won in the first singles when Daniella Dandalanin retired due to injury after the former seized a 6-4 opening-set lead.
