Alicia hosts first Isabela Provincial Athletic Meet

ALICIA, Isabela—Mayor Joel Amos P. Alejandro led the official opening of the Isabela Provincial Athletic Meet, the first-ever held at the Alicia Athletic Oval from February 28 to March 2.

In his speech, Mayor Alejandro highlighted his dedication to sports and fostering grassroots’ sports growth, particularly in rural areas. He emphasized how important sports are in helping young people develop discipline, sportsmanship, and togetherness.

“It provides a stage for exhibiting skill, encouraging healthy rivalry, and developing the next generation of outstanding athletes,” said Alejandro.

The mayor reiterated his commitment to continue advocating for more robust sports-related programs. This commitment is consistent with his long-standing support of promoting healthy habits among young people.

He underscored the importance of sports for the development and well-being of young Filipinos as well as their place in the sports sector.

Six teams from six different province-wide districts gathered for the athletic meet, each bringing their own competitive attitude and skill set to the table.

Also, the event highlighted the crowning of Isabela’s 2024 Sports King and Queen from among the different districts at the Alicia Community Center.

The event was also attended by the Department of Education Regional Director Benjamin D. Paragas, Aida P. Alejandro, Chairman of the Municipal Cultural and Tourism Council of Alicia, local chief executives, members of the Sangguniang Bayan of Alicia led by Vice

Mayor Andy Bonn Velasco, and representatives of the district’s representatives and teachers.

First-place winners in District 3 took 140 golds, 120 silvers, and 102 bronze medals particularly in taekwondo, dance sports and individual events. With 108 golds, 95 silvers and 86 bronze medals, District 1 placed second, followed by District 5, which came in third with 64 golds, 50 silvers and 55 bronze medals.

The fourth, fifth, and sixth places were occupied by Districts 4, 2, and 6, respectively.
