THE University of Perpetual Help Altas got help from Angelo Gelsano as they stunned the defending champion Letran Knights, 73-61, on Wednesday in the 99th National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament at the FilOil-EcoOil Arena in San Juan.
Gelsano came off the bench as he unloaded eight of his 10 points in the last period for the Altas as they turned the tables on the Knights to improve with their 4-6 win-loss record.
The Altas, who got a team-high 17 points from Marcus Nitura, unleashed a decisive 19-0 run, allowing them to move ahead, 70-51, in the last 2:46, after trailing, 51-59, at the start of the period.
The Knights, who were held to six points in the final canto, slipped to 1-9 in the standings.
Art Roque shot 16 points for the Altas, while Jielo Razon added 13.
The Knights got 14 points from Paolo Javillonar, while Vince Cuajao made 11.
