Coach Jeff Napa said they were just lucky in their unexpected win over the Blue Eagles on Saturday at the start of the basketball tournament.

“Nakatsamba kami. Iyun lang. Nakatsamba kami against a strong team,” said Napa, as the Bulldogs posted their biggest lead of 20 points near the end of the game.

The Bulldogs, with Mark Padrones making nine points, built their lead on a 11-0 rally that allowed NU to overcome a 4-9 deficit and jump to a 15-0 spread in the last 5:41 of the first period.

PJ Palacielo’s layup in the 1:27 mark of the fourth saw NU enjoying a 77-57 spread.

Meanwhile, the University of the East Warriors got off to a great start and sustained their big efforts until the end to put away the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, 80-70.

Sophomore Rey Remogat shot a game-high 21 points for the Warriors, who never relinquished the lead after pulling away from a 22-all deadlock in the second period.

Nigerian Precious Momowei impressed with 17 points and the 15 rebounds for the Warriors, who were outrebounded, 38-50.
