THE Department of Tourism is playing an active role in the country’s hosting of the Southeast Asia Basketball Association Under-16 tournament, a qualifying event for the FIBA Asia Under-16 event, which will be held in Cagayan de Oro City.

Famous for its whitewater rafting and kayaking adventures, Cagayan de Oro, which serves as a business hub and regional center in Northern Mindanao, will be staging the event from April 14 to 19.

It will serve as the venue of the games to be participated by teams from Brunei, Myanmar, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia are going to participate.

The city is no stranger to staging basketball games. Cagayan de Oro has always been included in the calendar of the Philippine Basketball Association each time the league holds road games. It also has its own basketball team in the past, the Cagayan de Oro Nuggets/Amigos.

Cagayan de Oro’s prominent school, Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan, has produced prominent basketball players, including future Hall of Famer Jojo Lastimosa and PBA player Nelbert Omolon.
