Director Sigrid Bernardo has expressed her dream of wanting to direct a lesbian film starring Nadine Lustre and Kathryn Bernardo.

During the Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival media conference on Jan. 22 at the Art Son Events Place, Quezon City, the director said that she would like to have the two award-winning actresses in a mature lesbian movie.

She referenced the 1982 crime drama film, T-bird at Ako, directed by Danny Zialcita, which starred Former Batangas Governor Vilma Santos and Veteran Actress Nora Aunor. It was considered to be one of the earliest films in the country to portray LGBT themes.

Nahuhusayan ako dun sa dalawa. And alam mo iyon, ang tagal ko nang hindi gumagawa ng lesbian movie, di ba?” said Bernardo.

“I really want to do a film na mature naman, yung nasa right age sila. About relationships, about the struggles of being in a relationship,” the director added further.

Bernardo also said that it was about time for the public to accept this kind of film from the two actresses, saying that it was the right time to make one.

The writer-director is no stranger to work surrounding the theme of girls’ love (GL). Her first feature-length film was ‘Ang Huling Cha-Cha ni Anita’ (2013), which starred Therese Malvar and Angel Aquino, tackling a coming-of-age story about a girl who has a crush on another woman. In 2022, she directed ‘Lulu’ which was a mini-series that starred Rhen Escaño and Rita Martinez.

Bernardo is also known for her films such as ‘Kita Kita’ (2017), ‘Untrue’ (2019), ‘Mr. and Mrs. Cruz’ (2018), and ‘Lorna’ (2014).

As one of the finalists for the first Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival, Bernardo’s entry is ‘Pushcart Tales’ which stars Therese Malvar, Nonie Buencamino, Shamaine Centenera-Buencamino, Elora Españo, Harvey Bautista, and Carlos Siguion-Reyna.

The Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival is a film festival spearheaded by the grocery chain to provide opportunities to local filmmakers. The film festival will be held on March 15-17 at Gateway Cinemas in Cubao, Quezon City.
