Student-artists open YouTube channel, encourage public access

Young artists from internationally-lauded student-artist groups have launched their own YouTube channel, which features documented award-winning live performances during national and international competitions, for free and accessible to the general public.

Named Art Is Here, the homegrown talents of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and Karilyo Shadowplay Team, Dulaang Filipino (DF), Coro San Benildo and Saint Benilde’s Romancon Dance Company (SBRDC), will be showcased especially during these trying times.

The platform will likewise offer a series of annual recruitment workshops and online tutorials, ideal for students who wish to explore various performance arts as well as the fundamentals of stage design and make-up. It will likewise host short films, taken from their very own repertoire.

The Office of Culture and Arts, together with the rest of the student-artists, will continue to transform pieces and performances to be adapted to the new stage.

Karilyo Shadowplay Team is a group dedicated to popularizing and developing the art of shadowplay. Its first production was a short original shadowplay Paalam Agnes. It was quickly followed by KARILYO, which consists of La Salle and Huling Sinag ng Araw. The team has been lauded with Excellence Awards from the Philippine Student Quill Awards, which honors students with exemplary communication research, programs, skills, and creative work given by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Philippines.

Dulaang Filipino (DF) is the college’s resident theater company, empowered to educate its audience on various social issues afflicting today’s society. Their first overseas engagement was the Montreal International Theatre Festival. Their piece Oedipus, a one-hour reduction of Sophocles’ Theban trilogy, has garnered a number of citations from all over the world including Best Performance by Amateur Theatre and Special Prize from Jury, Best Physical and Sound Solution at the Teatralny Kufar in Minsk, Belarus and Premios EscenAmateur in Madrid, Spain for Best International Show in the IV “Juan Mayorga” de las Artes Escénicas.

Coro San Benildo has participated in choral competitions locally and internationally, where they garnered global distinctions, such as top prizes in the 54th Seghizzi International Choral Competition in Gorizia, Italy, and Champion titles in the Youth Choir Competition in the 70th Llangollen Musical Eisteddfod in Wales, United Kingdom.

The channel will also feature busking videos around Paris and the travel vlog of the team during the 46th Florilège Vocal de Tours in Tours, France, where they bagged three awards for the renaissance contest, the mixed vocal ensembles, and the Audience Choice (Prix Du Public) citation.

The SBRDC was the third runner-up at the World Hip Hop Dance Championship in Las Vegas, USA, Silver Medalist at the World Hip Hop Dance Championship in San Diego, USA, and first runner-up at the Hip Hop International Philippines in Manila. They have been hailed as the Three-peat National Champion of Hip Hop International Philippines in Manila, and has received the three-peat Gold Medal Award for the Philippines in the Hong Kong Challenge Cup Dance Competition.
