English singer-songwriter kicks off Manila concert with sentimental message of ‘freedom’ and self-acceptance

Sam Smith  kicked off their electrifying Manila leg of the  Gloria The Tour  concert with a poignant message of “freedom” and self-acceptance, setting the stage for a truly unforgettable evening of music and self-expression.

“It’s truly incredible to be back here, and I want to express my gratitude. I will never take your support for granted. Thank you for standing by our side throughout the years. I recall being here when I was just 21, and it was a remarkable experience. Tonight, we’re here to give you everything,” Smith, who uses “they/them” pronouns after coming out as non-binary in 2019, told the crowd.

“This show is about many things, but one thing I hope you take with you tonight is that it’s about freedom. Just have fun and enjoy yourselves. Whatever you want to do, we’re here to support you,” the singer added.

The Mall of Asia Arena on October 21 came alive with more than nine thousand enthusiastic fans, all eagerly anticipating the arrival of the music sensation. Smith did not disappoint, making a grand entrance that left the audience in sheer awe.

Opening the show, Smith emerged atop a massive golden Aphrodite statue that adorned the stage floor. Dressed in an opulent ensemble of gold trousers and a white shirt, accentuated by an intricate metallic corset, Smith’s presence was nothing short of mesmerizing.

The concert was more than just a musical spectacle; it was a celebration of self-expression and freedom. Smith’s radiant joy and enthusiasm were palpable as they sang to the vast crowd. “When I created this album, it was a different world for us. We couldn’t do what we can do now, together. Now, I want to share this experience with you and perform for you. I also want to dedicate my life to music because when we create music, it’s not a solitary endeavor; we create it with our friends and loved ones.”

The performance featured an array of incredible songs, including classics like “Stay With Me,” “I’m Not The Only One,” “Like I Can,”  “Too Good at Goodbyes,” and “How Do You Sleep?” to name a few. The energy of the show soared with hits such as “Dancing with a Stranger,” “I’m Kissing You”, “Lay Me Down,” and “Love Goes.”

As the night progressed, Smith took the audience on an enthralling journey with songs like “Gimme,” where a sextet of dancers bedecked in sheer sparkles graced the stage.

During “I’m Not Here to Make Friends,” Smith was draped in an extravagant, Barbie-pink robe, singing joyously and being fanned by their dancers, creating a club-like atmosphere.

The climax of the concert came with the performance of “Unholy,” where Smith donned horned headwear and brandished a red pitchfork, embracing a sultry and theatrical persona, all while sporting a captivating gold corset.
