After a few years in hiatus, actor Derek Ramsay makes a successful return as he takes on the lead role in the horror movie ‘Kampon,’ Quantum Films’ official entry to the 2023 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

In an interview, Ramsay shares his initial doubts about returning to acting after such a prolonged break but expresses excitement about the project.

“I’m excited with the project,” he said. “First, it’s an MMFF entry. But at first, I doubted if I could still act considering my long absence. I just can’t say no to my producer Ninang Joji (Alonso). After seeing the entire movie though, I felt that it was the right decision to do it. Big thanks to our director King Palisoc for guiding me and helping me deliver a competent performance.”

Addressing the possibility of a broader return to the acting field, Ramsay stated, “For film, maybe. But TV? No, I’m not open to doing any soaps at this point. My focus now is to have a baby with my wife Ellen (Adarna). So, after Kampon, I’ll rest again.”

Ramsay reflects on his previous acting projects, mentioning his participation in the Netflix original movie Extraction 2, which starred Hollywood actor Chris Hemsworth. With two Best Actor trophies from the MMFF under his belt, Ramsay acknowledges the complexity of his role in ‘Kampon’ and expresses a desire for the film to clinch the Best Picture award.

“That’s my last movie before I decided to do Kampon,” he said.

It can be remembered that he has already won two Best Actor trophies from the MMFF: one for English Only Please in 2014 and another for All of You in 2017. Does he feel he can make it three with Kampon?

“As to chances of winning another Best Actor plum, my role is complex. My character has many issues. But honestly, more than winning Best Actor, I want our film to grab the Best Picture award,” Ramsay went on.

When asked about his leading lady, Beauty Gonzalez, Ramsay praises her as a brilliant actress, emphasizing his admiration for her talent.

“I only have good words for her. Not just because she’s the best friend of my wife in real life. She’s a brilliant actress as well,” he noted.

Switching gears, Ramsay shares personal insights, revealing his love for children and expressing his commitment to being the best father he can be. As he anticipates the next chapter in his life, Ramsay looks forward to the release of Kampon and the possibility of expanding his family.
