Chances Are, You and I has been selected as a Spotlight Entry at the inaugural Jinseo Arigato International Film Festival in Tokyo, Japan. Running from today until the 26th, this film event offers stars Kelvin Miranda and Kira Balinger the opportunity to present their film to the Filipino community in Japan as well as to the global audience.

Speaking to Manila Standard Entertainment, director Cathy Camarillo expressed her excitement about the film’s inclusion: “I’m delighted and fortunate that our story has been appreciated. Being chosen as the opening salvo, we hope more people will come to appreciate both the story of our two characters and Filipino-made films included in the festival.”

Initially, a local screening was planned, but the festival opportunity was too significant to pass up according to the director.

“It’s also exciting that we can serve as a bridge for Filipinos in Japan to connect with their homeland,” Camarillo added.

Apart from romance, ‘Chances Are, You and I’ also explores the themes of familial and societal issues

Camarillo highlighted the film’s quality and unique premise, which stands out from the traditional romance, comedy, or drama genres, as the reason for its selection as the festival’s opening film.

“We believe the relatable story and excellent performances of our actors contributed to this honor. The positive social media feedback has been heartwarming, and we hope the film will succeed,” she said.

Lead actors Kira and Kelvin, who are currently in Japan to present their film, emphasized the film’s relevance, especially to today’s youth.

“Our characters aim to raise awareness about brain illness, which is a global issue,” Kira said. “We hope people who are suffering from mental health issues will find inspiration in our story.”

Miranda added that the film not only explores romantic themes but also delves into family and societal issues.

“The film poses the question of whether you’d let fate decide for you or if you’d change the course of your life. We want to convey that every problem has a solution,” he said.

In Chances Are, You and I, Kelvin plays Sol Sikat, a young man struggling with a brain tumor and a bleak outlook on life. Kira portrays Gabi Sinag, Sol’s opposite – a vibrant soul who remains optimistic despite her diagnosis. Gabi’s indomitable spirit drives her to seek joy and a normal life despite her illness.

The film unspools in local cinemas nationwide on May 29, with a premiere night at SM Megamall on May 28.
