Actress and singer Maris Racal treated both fans and OPM lovers to her new single, “Pumila Ka,” which boasts witty lyric and an aesthetic music video to accompany it.

Actress and singer Maris Racal

The video starts with Maris recreating her viral video of her typing on a laptop with both eyebrows raised. This particular scene became a popular meme used by netizens locally and overseas. But this time, Maris is seen wearing a pastel purple ensemble in front of a holographic background.

As the music video progresses, Maris changes into other outfits that represent her love for K-pop, Lady Gaga, and Ariana Grande. But Maris’s looks are only one part of the video that made it a visual treat to viewers. She also demonstrated effortless dance moves that match the song’s beat to a tee.

In its entirety, all the elements of the music video, from the wardrobe to the makeup to the choreography, worked together to create a performance that viewers can’t get enough of.

The music video for “Pumila Ka” premiered on Jan. 19. As of writing, the video received more than 110 thousand views and 11,000 likes from Maris’s adoring fans.

Besides the visuals of the song, netizens were also proud of Maris for continuing to honor her Bisayan roots by adding parts of the dialect throughout the single.

“Pumila Ka”—like Maris’s other singles released in the previous year, “Ate Sandali” and “Asa Naman”—is conceived with the help of her partner, Filipino singer-songwriter Rico Blanco. The pair worked together to create the song’s music while Rico headed its production.

Singer-rapper Raven

Rico was also the one who discovered singer-rapper Raven, who worked with Maris in writing the lyric for “Pumila Ka” and also makes an appearance in the song’s music video. Raven released his debut album Lika Na in mid-November last year.

The song itself may also be a nod towards their relationship, which the couple confirmed in May of last year. Before that, Maris received a lot of comments from netizens and fans of the OPM singer, telling her to fall in line when it came to vying for Rico’s affection.

However, some netizens are saying that the song talks about the development of her career in the entertainment industry.

“When she auditioned sa PBB, Maris lined up. When she exited PBB, she didn’t rush. She also isn’t her network’s favorite. She had to work hard for her career without stepping on anyone else. She worked hard for what she has now. Truly, she’s a rare gem that anyone should emulate,” one user said in the music video’s comments.

In the meantime, other fans commented that the pop era suits Maris well, and she should continue to make music that shows her authenticity and pure talent.

Regardless of the reason behind the song, Maris served looks, melody, and a whole new vibe with her new single, Maris’s first release for this year. Her last one was the Filipino version of “Simulan,” which was recorded and released in November, and serves as the theme song for Disney’s Princesses campaign in the Philippines.

The music video is available for viewing on Maris Racal’s YouTube channel.
