DUMAGUETE CITY—At least 14 people died and three others were injured as the truck they were riding on lost its brakes and fell off a cliff at Sitio Tubod, Barangay Bulwang in Mabinay, Negros Oriental on Wednesday.
The passengers were all livestock buyers from La Libertad, Negros Oriental.
They were on their way to Dauis, Bayawan City when the truck they were riding, driven by Antonio Boganotan Toreno, lost its brakes and overshot the road before it fell off the cliff past 1:30 p.m.
Lt. Stephen Polinar, spokesperson of the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office, said Toreno—a widower, also from La Libertad—was among the injured and is now recuperating at the health center in Mabinay.
Police identified 10 of the fatalities as Jun Jun Magos, Peding Desipolo, a certain Lindo, a certain Leo, a certain Jemboy, Junior Desipolo, a certain Marlon, Ric Ric Desipolo, Dodoy Magos and Allan Flores. Four others have yet to be identified.
The other injured were identified as Almer Gargoles and Jovanni Flores.
Polinar said the police are preparing to file a complaint of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide against the driver.
