Filipino researchers are looking at artificial intelligence (AI) and 3D printing as possible solutions for bone-related challenges, according to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

The DOST said researchers are currently working on the target solutions aimed at providing a more accessible and affordable solution to bone problems resulting from aging, infections, and accidents.

“By integrating transformative technologies like AI and 3D printing, we are charting a course towards a future where healthcare is revolutionized, and innovative approaches become the cornerstone of medical advancements. This collaborative initiative, showcasing the dedication and expertise of our team, holds promise in providing accessible and affordable solutions for bone-related challenges,” Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) executive director Dr. Jaime Montoya was quoted in a post by DOST.

“Once successful, this initiative may empower surgeons with a diverse selection of composite materials, custom-tailored to meet the medical and financial needs of individual patients,” The DOST post stated.

The team is currently led by Dr. Erwin Enriquez of the Ateneo de Manila University and supported by the PCHRD. The team is also partnered with researchers from the Vellore Institute of Technology in India.
