Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has encouraged rehabilitated drug users to become “witnesses and teachers” against substance abuse.

He noted that they have valuable lessons to teach the youth about how to avoid falling into addiction.

The senator and his wife Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano, together with Taguig 1st District Rep. Ricardo “Ading” Cruz, came to the drug treatment facility in the city’s Bicutan district to distribute food and hygiene packs to patients. Macon Ramos-Araneta

Cayetano, who turns 52 today (October 28), said the activity was part of his birthday week celebration.

The Cayetanos also renewed their commitment to improve the drug treatment facility, with the senator saying details of the planned improvements will be ironed out with hospital administrators and officials from the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

“Compared with the other facilities, even with other  private rehab, this one in Bicutan is very conducive for their rehabilitation,” he said.

With a patient capacity of 3,000, the DOH Treatment and Rehabilitation Center in Camp Bagong Diwa is the largest drug treatment facility in the country.

Cayetano reminded the rehab patients that they could still fully integrate back into their families and society, and that their past addiction should not prevent them from improving their lives once they come out of treatment.

“Let’s focus on the redemptive side,” the senator added.
