The city government of Taguig assured its constituents on Thursday that it would continue to support its coastal communities in the form of more projects to improve the livelihood of fishermen.

The local government recently distributed fishnets and other equipment to more than 1,000 fishermen from the 12 coastal barangays of Taguig.

“What we want is to improve the livelihood of our fisherfolks and increase their income. Our hope and prayer is for them to prosper and fully enjoy the fruits of their labor. With the new fishing equipment and with our regular supply of fingerlings, they will surely be more efficient in what they do,” said Mayor Laarni Cayetano in a statement.

A total of 1,080 registered fisherfolks received their equipment during a turnover ceremony at the Cayetano Sports Complex.

“This gesture is just a confirmation of Taguig City’s good relationship with our fisherfolk community, and we want to assure them that their local government is there to  help them be more productive,” said Cayetano.

The city government also gave away four parao and 12 lunday boats, which will enable fisherfolks to increase their catch. It also regularly provides fingerlings to the fisherfolk which is needed to maintain the normal fishing cycle of breeding and harvesting all-year round in their fishing sanctuary.

The program is a project of the city government in coordination with the Agriculture department and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

Cayetano said despite the urban development, she wants Taguig to maintain and preserve its fishing communities in the  coastal barangays to promote the city’s “ProbinSyudad,” a program where residents enjoy both the amenities of a highly urbanized city as well as healthy rural living.
