Japan has given two more doppler radars to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

The instruments were turned over by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to the Philippines’ weather bureau on Friday morning.

The two state-of-the-art doppler radars are worth P 1.77 billion.

The apparatus will be set up in Aparri, Cagayan and in Guiuan, Samar.

With the donation, PAGASA now has a total of 15 doppler radars across the country.

JICA also gave a doppler radar to PAGASA in 2012 and this was installed in Virac, Catanduanes.

Doppler radar helps in weather forecasting by measuring the direction and speed (velocity) of objects, such as drops of precipitation, in the atmosphere.

This enables forecasters to tell if weather systems are moving toward or away from the area where the radar is stationed.
