PNP chief orders crackdown vs. name-dropping scammers

Philippine National Police chief Gen. Rommel Marbil on Friday ordered the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) to go after scammers using his name in illegal activities.

“I have received a report that they are using my name. That is what happens when a new PNP chief is appointed,” he said in an interview on the sidelines of the 41st anniversary celebration of the Special Action Force in Fort Sto. Domingo, Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

“I don’t tolerate these things. It is not proper for the PNP to be involved in these illegal activities,” he added.

Marbil gave the directive after the CIDG arrested a suspect identified as Deanson Magsino for violating the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, along Gen. Malvar Ave. Barangay Poblacion 1, Sto. Tomas City, Batangas at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The operating team asked Magsino to present a license and permit to carry a caliber .45 pistol with one magazine and seven rounds of live ammunition.

The suspect, however, failed to present proper documents.

Arresting officers learned the suspect was involved in collecting money from establishments and was using the PNP chief’s name in the provinces of Laguna, Batangas, and Cavite.
