House Speaker Martin Romualdez will summon the officials of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and ask them to explain why RFIDs of vehicles could not be read at the toll gates which resulted in a traffic jam last Holy Wednesday.

According to Deputy Majority Leader Rep. Erwin Tulfo, “Many people were angry and reported to Speaker Romualdez that their RFID stickers were not being read when passing through the toll plaza, which caused a very long traffic in NLEX that day.”

“What is the use of RFID if they ask for that card at the toll booth,” Tulfo added.

The lawmaker also said, “not only NLEX but also SLEX and Toll Regulatory officials will also be met by the Speaker to find out what steps they are taking regarding the non-functioning of RFIDs at some toll gates.”

“The Speaker wants to know if their RFID reader or RFID laser is defective so that’s why?” asked the lawmaker from ACT-CIS Partylist.

“In Japan, Singapore, and Europe, the boom barrier will automatically raise immediately when a vehicle passes through the toll gate”, he said.

Tulfo said, “it looks like the RFID reader they put here is cheap, so it can’t read the sticker.”

“The complaint about the RFID not being read has been going on for a long time and has been reaching Speaker Romualdez even from some of our colleagues in congress”, the Deputy Majority Leader of Congress for Communications said.

“Now if they can’t fix it, maybe congress can start reviewing their franchises upon the instruction of the Speaker, of course…and maybe there is someone else there who can solve that problem”, Tulfo concluded.
