After laying down her plans for the basic education sector last year, Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte will update the public about the ongoing projects of her department under the ‘MATATAG’ agenda.

Duterte will deliver her second Basic Education Report this Thursday, Jan. 25, in Pasay City. High-ranking government officials, diplomats, education partners, and DepEd executives are expected to attend, according to a press statement released by her office on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

‘MATATAG’ aims to make school curricula relevant to produce competent, job-ready, active and responsible citizens; take steps to accelerate delivery of basic education facilities and services; take good care of students by promoting their well-being, inclusive education, and positive learning environment; and give support to teachers, so they can teach better.

Duterte launched her education agenda in August 2023, which revised the basic education curriculum by reducing the number of competencies and focusing more on the development of foundational skills among kindergarten to Grade 3 students such as literacy, numeracy, and socioemotional skills.

She noted in her speech last year that DepEd went through an “extensive and painstaking” process of reviewing the K-to-12 program, since the time of former Secretary Leonor Briones, which demanded the collaboration of education stakeholders.
