MPT Mobility Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Metro Pacific Tollways Corp., said Monday it plans to install electric vehicle charging stations in all of its expressways next year.
“This technology is still fresh. In fact, not a lot investors are already doing electric charging in the Philippines. That is why there are no motorists buying electric cars, but we will pave the way in installing all of these electric charging stations, with at least one in each of our expressways,” said Mark Richmund De Leon, MPT Mobility vice president for business development.
“We will have at least one in NLEX [North Luzon Expressway], one in Cavitex [Manila-Cavite Expressway] and in Calax [Cavite-Laguna Expressway]. So, that’s the plan of MPT Mobility,” he said.
De Leon said the company would also put up EV charging stations at parking lots managed by subsidiary Dibz.
DIbz is a smart parking services group that offers pre-booked parking, valet services, parking management and Dibz Shop.
“It’s an opportunity wherein office workers can charge while they are parking to DIBz-managed parking lots,” he said.
Government data showed that there were 12,965 registered EVs last year, up by 8.5 percent ffrom 11,950 in 2019.
The Department of Trade and Industry earlier estimated that EVs would grow to 300,000 by 2030.
MPTC earlier consolidated non-toll related businesses into a new company to generate new revenue streams and serve customers better.
The country’s largest toll operator created MPT Mobility Inc. to house seven new business units offering digitally-driven solutions.
“MPT Mobility is the primary organization that we set up to pursue new revenue streams outside of our heritage expressway business while improving customer experience. So, those are the twin objectives that we want to meet,” said Rodrigo Franco, president and chief executive of MTPC.
“MPT Mobility will play a key role in transforming some of our digital ideas into actual products and services,” he said.
Franco said the company accelerated its digital transformation because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Given the trends that will shape the future of our industry, there’s no way for us not to go digital. We want to be a digital company,” he said.
