A future of ‘refillables’

In its efforts to reduce plastic waste, beauty and skincare brand Kiehl’s in July launched the Refillables program in the Philippines.

The Refillables program offers customers Kiehl’s shampoo, conditioner, shower cleanser, hand soap, and hand and body lotion in one-liter pouches which they can transfer in 250ml pump bottles available at Kiehl’s (free for a limited time) or their own reusable containers.

“With less plastic used and more formula, this latest addition to the Kiehl’s line makes it easy for consumers to reduce single-use plastic waste in their everyday routine,” the brand said in a statement.

The 1-liter refillable packs are currently available for Kiehl’s amino acid shampoo, amino acid conditioner, bath and shower liquid cleanser, hand soap, hand and body lotion, and creme de corps.

The plastic pouches can also be returned to stores as part of the brand’s Recycle and Be Rewarded program, a loyalty program that gives rewards to customers who give back their empty and used Kiehl’s bottles and jars. Since 2009, the program has reclaimed 13 million empty jars and bottles globally.

In addition to allowing customers to minimize their plastic waste, Kiehl’s packs its nature-inspired products in more eco-friendly packaging. According to the brand, over 80 percent of its bottles and jars sold around the world are made from post-consumer recycled materials.

On e-commerce, where packaging has been a major contributor to plastic waste, the apothecary skincare brand has been using Green Parcel since 2020 – a 100 percent plastic-free and biodegradable packaging used for orders placed on Lazada, Shopee, and other social commerce channels. The brand uses honeycomb wrapping in lieu of plastic bubble wrap.

The launch of Refillables program is part of Kiehl’s 2021 sustainability initiatives for its Future Made Better campaign. In addition to reducing the environmental impact of packaging, the two other pillars of the campaign include responsible sourcing of ingredients and creating tools for environmental education.

For environmental education, Kiehl’s has teamed up with Save the Philippine Seas (SPS) to create the Earthducation Kit, a manual that aims to empower educators to teach young kids about sustainable practices and how to create an eco-learning space.

“Through the Earthducation kit, we want to encourage collective action and behavior changes with practices you can do at home and different spaces,” said Anna Oposa, executive director and “chief mermaid” of SPS.

Oposa said the first 40 kits would be distributed to 30 public schools in Valenzuela City and 10 educators in nongovernment organizations and private schools.
