BOGO CITY, Cebu—Four new classrooms will augment the existing classrooms of the Marcelo B. Fernan Polambato Elementary School here as SM Foundation turned over a two-storey school building constructed in partnership with DFS Group Limited, the world’s leading luxury travel retailer, whose stores are in various airports worldwide.

The structure—furnished with 200 student arm chairs including 20 arm chairs for left-handed students, four teacher’s desk sets, 16 wall fans, eight blackboards, four wall clocks and four washrooms—is the third school building donated by SMFI to the school.

It also brings the total number of school buildings donated by SM Foundation throughout the country to 80 since 2002.

Brigith Jugasan, principal of the Marcelo B. Fernan Elementary School, expressed her gratitude to the benefactors for the generosity and care they extended to the school.

“As the principal of this institution and on behalf of the Department of Education, it is my honor and privilege to thank the SM Group of Companies through SM Foundation, DFS Group Limited, and the Fernan family for their never-ending support to the Polambato people in giving all the school buildings that our learners will be using,” Jugasan said.

Jugan Elementary School, also in Cebu, was a beneficiary of SMFI’s school building program.

Bogo City was among the most devastated communities hit by Typhoon “Yolanda” (international name “Haiyan”) in 2013.  To facilitate its rehabilitation, SM Foundation immediately helped by turning over two school buildings to Fernan Polambato school in partnership with Deutsche Bank.

This is apart from 200 new homes constructed in the SM Cares Village here, to provide shelter to those who lost their dwellings in the wake of the typhoon.

Communities hosting SM Malls and SM Store are being supported by the SM Group through the SM Foundation Inc. with its commitment of providing not only quality education, livelihood training but quality health care as well.

SMFI has refurbished and renovated two medical facilities here in the Cebu City Medical Center and the San Remigio Main Health Center, as well as conducted medical missions. It also completed nine farmers’ training programs and planted 10,000 saplings under its Grow A Million Trees program.

All these are benefiting Cebu, including 169 college scholars and 165 technical-vocational scholars supported by the SM scholarship program.
