Malapitan calls for caution vs. fires in Caloocan

As the country celebrates Fire Prevention Month this March, Caloocan Mayor Oscar Malapitan called on his constituents to take extra care, safety measures and discipline to avoid fire incidents in the city.

The government, through a presidential proclamation, has declared March of each year as a fire prevention month because of the temperature and humidity in the country that cause more incidence of fire in the country.

Because of this, Malapitan said that the city government is joining with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) by reminding every resident of Caloocan of their awareness and discipline this month to avoid fires.

Based on statistics released by the BFP, from January 1 to December 11 in in 2019, the number of fire incidents increased to 16,382 from 15,848 in 2018, along with the number of fatalities to 9 percent or 326 persons.

Records also showed that wrong connection of electric wiring remains the highest cause of fire, followed by undisciplined throwing of cigarette butts and overheating household appliances.

The mayor emphasized that the life of a person “is worth more than anything.”
