A caretaker gives Mali, the 50 years elephant living in the Philippines her favourite meal inside the newly renovated Manila Zoo in Adriatico Manila on Thursday, March 3, 2022, on the occasion of World Wildlife Day under the theme Recovering key species for ecosystem restoration. Mali with his nickname Vishwamali is a female Sri Lankan elephant. Mali was 3 years sent to the country by the Sri Lankan Government as a gift to then First Lady Imelda Marcos in 1977. The United Nations records in 2021 over 8,400 species of wild fauna and flora are critically endangered, while close to 30,000 more are understood to be endangered or vulnerable. Based on these estimates, it is suggested that over a million species are threatened with extinction. DANNY PATA
