Belgrove Power Corp., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fort Pilar Energy Inc., disclosed plans to construct a 60-megawatt new gas turbine power facility inside the Malaya Thermal Power Plant compound in Pililla, Rizal.

The proposed power plant, costing P3.8 billion, will have two generator units and will provide ancillary services to the national grid.

BPC will use aero-derivative gas turbines, which can provide reliable power that is cleaner, cheaper and offers better grid stability.

Aero-derivative gas turbines have the highest availability of any thermal power technology at 98.2 percent. It can operate seamlessly on natural gas to propane, diesel or other fuels without the need for pilot fuels, increasing operational security and lowering fuel costs.

BPC plans to use diesel for the proposed project as the fuel is a more flexible, secured, environment- friendly and cost-effective energy source compared to coal and bunker fuel.

The company said it will also use liquefied natural gas in the future and when supply becomes available.

“The project will serve as a source of ancillary service [i.e., primary, secondary and tertiary reserves] for the Luzon grid and power quality improvement for distribution utilities to help ease the frequency and voltage problems,” BPC said in its submission to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

BPC acquired the 650-MW MTTP power plant, including the land, from Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp.

The company also intends to rehabilitate the 650-MW MTPP facilities and continue operating them as ancillary services.
