The Climate Change Commission, United States Agency for International Development-Philippines and the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory on Wednesday updated the 2014 wind resource atlas for assessment and geospatial analysis for the Philippines to guide investors.

The new wind atlas expanded and updated the old wind resource atlas published in 2001.

The document included up to date resource modeling techniques as well as the turbine technologies over the past decade.

The updated atlas includes new data sets and maps to support both government energy planning and industry investment in the emerging wind energy sector.

The new techniques developed for the resource assessment under the updated data reported a much larger resource potential for the nation based on improved assessment capabilities and improvements in wind generators that access wind resources at higher hub heights.

The initiative supports the overall Philippine goal to promote wind development by providing wind resource information and tools that attract prospective renewable energy developers and investors.

“We hope that this initiative will not only support our internal causes but also contribute internationally in the promotion of low carbon emitting technologies… It will similarly help our partners identify potential areas where wind development is feasible.” said Energy Undersecretary Zenaida Monsada.
