Lopez mobile business bullish

ABS-CBN Corp., the media holding company of the Lopez Group, expects the number of subscribers of its mobile business to hit three million by the end of 2015.

“We have quite a challenge this year but our goal is bring this up to 3 million or double from last year’s level,” ABS-CBN Convergence president Carlo Katigbak told reporters.

Katigbak said ABS-CBNmobile was also expected to break even once the number of subscribers reached three million.

ABS-CBN earlier said its mobile business would need at least two million subscribers for ABS-CBNmobile to break even based on a higher average gross revenue per subscriber computation.

But since the company’s APRU was slowly increasing only, Katigbak said it needed three million subscribers to break even.

Katigbak said ABS-CBNmobile would not compete with other big players in the telecommunications industry that are offering free Internet promo just to attract subscribers.

“I don’t think is something it is going to go on forever. You cannot build your business on free,” Katigbak said.

ABS-CBN Convergence is ABS-CBN’s mobile telecommunications subsidiary and operates ABS-CBNmobile.

ABS-CBNmobile started to offer prepaid cellular services in late 2013 through a P3-billion network sharing agreement with Globe Telecom Inc. Its services include SMS, voice, and mobile Internet, along with the exclusive access to ABS-CBN contents through the IWanTV! app

ABS-CBNmobile and Kakao Philippines last year teamed up to offer unlimited chat and calls.
