Filipino lifters Vanessa Sarno may have missed podium finishes after she and Kristel Macrohon ended their campaigns with decent placings in the women’s 71-kg class category of  the 2021 World Weightlifting Monday at the Uzbekistan Sports Complex.

But the 18-year-old Sarno still impressed after she went on to smash two Philippine records that were set last year.

Sarno, who is from Tagbilaran, Bohol, cleared 103 kgs on her attempt, surpassing the 101-kg mark she achieved in the 2020 Asian Championships.

After lifting 128 kgs on her first try in the clean and jerk, Sarno settled for a total of 231, which was 2 kgs higher than what she set last year.

She went on to tie Swedish lifter Patricia Sternius and Olivia Reeves (USA) for third and five places overall.

But Sternius settled for the bronze medal after clearing 127 kgs on her first attempt.

USA’s Meredith Alwine claimed the overall  title with 235 kgs, beating Great Britain’s Sarah Davies’ 234.

Macrohon  landed seventh place after coming up with a total of 228 kg, off 103 kg in snatch and 125 in the clean and jerk.

An opportunity to earn a silver-medal finish opened up for Sarno, but she missed it when she failed to clear 131 kgs in her second and third attempts.

Macrohon also had chances for bronze had she lifted 130 kgs in second and third tries in the clean and jerk.
