Tokyo—Carlos Yulo struggled in the men’s floor exercise Saturday night, resulting in his failure to advance to the finals of his favorite event in the Summer Olympic Games’ artistic gymnastics competition at the Ariyake Gymnasium.

Yulo, the floor exercise champion in the 2019 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championship in Stuttgart, Germany, was uncharacteristically error prone in his pet event, his routine filled with poor landings and missteps.

He placed 44th in a field of 64 following a 13.566 score, outside the Top 8 that would make it to the finals in the apparatus.

Israel’s Artem Dolgopyat led the field with a 15.2, followed by the 15.066 of Russia’s Nikita Nagornyy, whom Yulo was keeping an eye on.

The Filipino, however, qualified in the finals of the vault after finishing sixth with a 14.712 score.
