Miko Eala scored a pair of victories as he and his teammates powered the Penn State University Nittany Lions to their second straight conference win in the Division 1 action of the US Big Ten Intercollegiate tennis competitions.
The elder brother of teen sensation Alexandra Eala, Miko made his mark both in the singles and the doubles for the Nittany Lions, who pulled off a 6-1 triumph over the Purdue Boilermakers at their home court in University Park, Pennsylvania.
This comes a day after their 4-3 beating of the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday.
The Nittany Lions now have a 2-3 win-loss record.
According to the team’s official website, the freshmen duo of Eala and British partner Sam Bossem clinched their first doubles victory, 6-4, over Perdue’s Sebastian Welch and Mateo Julio to hand their team the first point.
The pair of Tim Ruetzel and Charl Morgan then played an unfinished match against Milledge Cossu and Michal Wozniak, 4-all.
Then, another point came Penn State’s way when Christos Antonopoulos and Alp Sentay stopped the tandem of Sebastian Welch and Mateo Julio, 6-1.
In the first singles, Mateo Julio kept Purdue from getting shut out when he defeated Antonopoulos, 6-3, 6-2.
After that, Bora Sengul won over Sebastian Welch, 7-6 (6), 6-2, and Eala (PSU) downed Wozniak, 7-5, 7-6 (2), to add more points for Penn State.
Morgan, Ruetzel and Bossem gave Penn State its last three singles points.
“Everybody had to step up today. Sam Bossem got to play today and it was great to see him get his first college win. It was great to get our first doubles point. We really needed that and came out with great energy,” said head coach Jeff Zinn in a statement.
The Nittany Lions will have two road encounters against Michigan and Michigan State this weekend.
