6.2 quake jolts Sarangani; 4.1 rocks Catanduanes

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake jolted Mindanao Wednesday morning, striking 86 kilometers southeast of Sarangani City at 7:21 a.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

The tremor was of tectonic origin and it occurred at a shallow depth of 16 kilometers, the weather bureau said.

Intensity 5 was felt in General Santos City in South Cotabato, while intensity 4 was experienced in Kiamba, Alabel, Maasim, Glan, Malungon and Malapatan in Saranggani; Lebak in Sultan Kudarat; Datu Blah Sinsuat in Maguindanao; and Koronadal City, Polomolok, Tampakan and Tupi inSouth Cotabato.

Intensity 3 was felt in Maitum, Sarangani; Cotabato City, Maguindanao; Davao City; Kidapawan City, North Cotabato; Tantangan and Santo Niño in South Cotabato.

Intensity 2 was felt in Columbio, Sultan Kudarat; Tacurong City in Sultan Kudarat and Magpet in North Cotabato. Intensity 1 was felt in Zamboanga City.

Meanwhile, a magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck off Catanduanes at 8 a.m. 21 kilometers southeast of Bato town on Wednesday morning, the weather bureau said.

The earthquake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 11 kilometers.

The quake was not expected to cause damage or aftershocks, weathermen said.

A “slightly felt” tremor at Intensity II was recorded in Legazpi City, Albay, while a magnitude 6.2 quake struck off Davao Occidental earlier on Wednesday.
