Police round up 397 in Navotas

In just 24 hours, 397 residents of Navotas were arrested by police on Wednesday for violating quarantine protocols during the 14-day city-wide lockdown to stem the coronavirus pandemic.

Navotas City currently has 625 active COVID-19 cases.

The city government reported that 3,071 have been arrested during the first seven days of the lockdown.

With the addition of the 397 on Wednesday, total detainees are now at 3,468.

According to Mayor Toby Tiangco, of those arrested, 3,285 were adults, while 183 were minors.

Most of those arrested by police were not wearing face masks, violated curfew, and did not comply with physical distancing, Tiangco said. 

The detainees were fined P250 for not wearing a face mask for the first violation. Those who did not pay will have to do community service for eight hours. Those caught twice without face masks were fined P500 or must render 11 hours of community service.

A fine of up to P750 and one day of community service can be imposed for third-time violators, while those who break other health protocols will be fined from P1,000 to P3,000.
