Mayor to charge barangay officials

The Manila city government continues to go after local officials who violate quarantine protocols amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor Francisco “Isko” Domagoso said on Monday.

Domagoso said a barangay chairman was recently charged for being involved in illegal cockfighting in Tondo, while some barangay officials were caught drinking alcoholic beverages outside their homes.

“For the chairman we charged, they were caught cockfighting and we got witnesses that they really engaged in cockfighting during the GCQ (general community quarantine) in a small alleyway in Tondo," Domagoso said without naming the official.

“For the other official, we saw on video that barangay officials were drinking on the street, while the sun is still out. So, we continue to castigate these irresponsible barangay officials, while at the same time praising the others," he added.

Domagoso instructed Manila Police District (MPD) Director Police Brig. Gen. Rolando Miranda and the local police commanders to constantly monitor the situation in the 896 barangays of the city.

Last week, 34 parents of minors who have allegedly violated quarantine measures were arrested by police. Some city residents were seen ignoring social distancing measures and the proper wearing of face masks in public places amid the health crisis, the mayor noted.
