Olympic hopeful Nesthy Petecio is getting ready to try again.
After bowing out of contention last month in the 2020 Asia/Oceania boxing qualifying tournament in Amman, Jordan, Petecio has returned to training this week in Baguio City.
That’s after the 27-year-old Petecio emerged from a 14-day quarantine period upon arriving in the country.
“Tapos na ang quarantine period ko. Bumalik na ako sa training kahit magaan lang,” said Petecio.
Petecio, who is the no. 1 seed and world champion during the qualifier, lost on points to Sena Irie of Japan, 6-4, ending her bid to qualify for her first Olympic stint.
Irie, known for her orthodox stance, took round one, 3-2, after landing right-handed counter punches.
The 19-year-old Irie endured Petecio’s left crosses, but the Japanese fighter still got the points to take the win.
Putting her loss behind, Petecio is jogging and running for 30 minutes in the morning as she gets her workouts started inside the at the Teachers’ Camp, where many national athletes are housed while undergoing high-altitude training.
Petecio said she is now waiting for word from officials of the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines if she will be able to join the final qualifiers for the Tokyo Olympics, which has been moved to July, 2021 because of the ongoing threat posed by the coronavirus pandemic.
“Hintay lang kami ng sasabihin kung saan at kailan ang bagong qualifiers,” said Petecio.
She said the top officials of the ABAP are in discussions with the International Olympic Committee Boxing Task Force over the status of the qualifiers.
This was after six members of boxing teams, which attended an Olympic qualifying event in London in March, were said to have contracted the coronavirus.
Among them were members of the Turkish team, two fighters and a coach, who tested positive since returning from the event.
Members of the Croatian team, a fighter and two coaches, have also contracted the disease.
Organizers are now in discussion with member countries over the measures needed during the coming qualifiers.
“May mga nag-positive (sa qualifiers), kaya kailangan paghandaan. Baka may dagdag pang slots dahil dito,” added Petecio.
