Akbayan launches 1st community refill station

A progressive political party has launched the first community refill station in Quezon City in a bid to help stop using too much plastic.

At a media briefing, former-Akbayan Citizens’ Action Party Rep. Tom Villarin led the introduction of “Akbayanihan ecostore” or the so-called “Tindahang Walang Tapon”  in Barangay Culiat near the Diliman Christian Academy that sells a popular brand of cooking oil to the public as well as other condiments, dog shampoos, and dishwashing and fabric conditioner solutions in refill bottles “at very affordable prices.”

“This would discourage single-use plastic,” he told the Manila Standard.

The zero-waste store also offers black rice, laundry detergent soap and shampoo bars, among others.

The store’s products are directly sourced from Dumingag, Zamboanga del Norte, the first-ever organic agriculture town in the country.

Villarin urged Mayor Joy Belmonte to adopt the implementation of the ecostore project in the city’s 142 barangays.

He said other local government units, such as Marikina City, would also establish its ecostore in support of Republic Act 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act.
