With age, our bodies undergo changes that can impact our ability to communicate, eat, and swallow. Speech clarity may become challenging, making pronunciation of certain sounds and words difficult. Additionally, changes in cognitive function can affect our ability to understand and use language.

To help individuals cope with these communication challenges, Sunshine Place offers Speech Therapy for Adults, available every Tuesday by appointment. The program consists of 12 personalized sessions led by Carl Leann Lora, RSLP, a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP). He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in BS Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Sto. Tomas, Manila.

Recognizing the critical importance of SLPs in this important phase for older adults, Lora dedicates his practice to helping seniors with communication, cognitive, or swallowing impairments following illness, trauma, or disease, ultimately improving their quality of life.

Speech therapy, a specialized field serving individuals of all ages, including older adults, addresses communication and swallowing disorders. Its goal is to enhance communication skills and overall quality of life. Tailored to individual needs, the therapy for older adults typically utilizes a blend of exercises, activities, and compensatory strategies.

Speech and language therapy typically involves both assessment and therapy sessions. Therapy options address various concerns, including acquired language disorders (e.g., aphasia), motor speech disorders (e.g., apraxia of speech, dysarthria), cognitive-communication disorders, swallowing disorders (dysphagia), and fluency disorders (stuttering).
