It’s shaping up to be a fierce battle for Miss Universe Philippines 2024, dubbed the “bardagulan” (different opinions) edition by pageant aficionados.
The local franchise of Miss Universe introduced 55 candidates on Sunday — an interesting mix of pageant newbies and veterans all with their eyes on the coveted MUPH crown.
Incorporating inclusivity into the mix, MUPH has thrown open its doors wide for beauty queen hopefuls.
Age restrictions have been lifted and Filipinas abroad, representing Filipino communities from Australia, the United Kingdom, Hawaii, North and South California, Virginia, and Washington, have been allowed to participate.
Among the pageant veterans and heavy favorites are Ahtisa Manalo, a 26-year-old entrepreneur who is trading her Miss International 2018 first runner-up sash for another shot at the Miss Universe crown; 34-year-old Kris Janson, Miss Intercontinental 2014 second runner-up; as well as 33-year-old Christi McGarry, Miss Intercontinental 2015 first runner-up.
The winner will succeed Michelle Dee and will compete at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant in Mexico in September.
