Landslides are a frequent hazard across much of the Philippine archipelago nation due to its mountainous terrain, heavy rainfall, and widespread deforestation from mining, slash-and-burn farming and illegal logging.
Here are some of the worst landslides in the country’s history:
2006 Guinsaugon landslide
The February 11 massive landslide that buried an entire village in Saint Bernard, Southern Leyte resulted in the death of 1,221 people. Some 19,000 residents were displaced.
2006 Mayon Volcano mudslide
Typhoon Reming triggered a mudslide along Mayon Volcano, leaving at least 1,200 residents dead or missing.
2003 Panaon Island rockslide
A rockslide hit several communities on Panaon Island in Southern Leyte amid non-stop rains brought about by a low pressure area, with the death toll close to 200.
2009 Cordillera landslides
More than 160 people were killed in landslides in Benguet and Mountain Province amid fresh floods brought about by Tropical Storm Ondoy and Typhoon Pepeng.
2012 New Bataan, Compostela Valley debris flow
A debris flow buried Barangay Andap and resulted in the death of at least 128 residents as Typhoon Pablo made landfall in Mindanao.
