Brace for cooler weather during the Chinese New Year celebration due to the northeast monsoon or “hanging amihan,” according to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

“Over the weekend, the northeast monsoon will intensify to possibly reach Luzon until Sunday, then Monday and Tuesday,” said weather forecaster Benison Estareja.

“The heat and humidity we feel at noon will be somehow reduced,” he added.

Pagasa, in its Feb. 9 weather outlook, said ‘amihan’ is expected to bring cooler weather particularly in Luzon until early next week. Cloudy skies with light rains may prevail over Cagayan Valley, Aurora, Quezon and Bicol due to the surge of the northeast monsoon during the weekend.

The rest of the country may have isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

From Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14 to Feb. 16, the easterlies, or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean, will be the dominant weather system, especially affecting the eastern section of the country.

“Warm and humid weather conditions will be experienced over the whole country,” the weather bureau said.

Isolated rain showers or thunderstorms may continue to affect the eastern sections of Luzon and the Visayas.
