At least seven people were killed while five others were missing when a landslide hit a house in Monkayo, Davao de Oro on Thursday, Jan. 18, an official said.

The incident happened in the morning in the mountainous gold mining region where heavy rain has triggered flooding and landslides this week.

Rhyan Nanca, a member of the non-uniformed personnel of Monkayo Municipal Police, told AFP that two people were pulled alive from the house and taken to a local health centre for treatment.

Monkayo Mayor Manuel Zamora had issued a warning on Wednesday for people living in “high risk” areas of the municipality to leave their homes.

Meanwhile, a total of 187,108 people or nearly 45,000 families are struggling in temporary shelters across the Davao Region due to heavy floods and landslides brought by the shear line, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
